One of the first questions people ask is, “How big do Maine Coon cats get?”

Maine Coons are often called the gentle giants of the cat world, and for good reason. They are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, known for their impressive size and majestic appearance. With their long bodies, tufted ears, and fluffy tails, they stand out in any room they walk into.

Average Size of a Maine Coon

On average, a Maine Coon male weighs between 15–25 pounds, while females are usually a bit smaller, ranging from 10–18 pounds. These cats also have long, muscular bodies. A fully grown Maine Coon can measure up to 40 inches in length from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail. Their tails alone can be as long as 16 inches, almost as grand as a plume.

Growth Takes Time

Unlike most cat breeds that reach full size in about one year, Maine Coons grow slowly and steadily. They can take up to 3–5 years to fully mature, which means their size and weight continue to increase long after other cats have stopped growing.

How They Compare to Other Cats

While an average domestic cat weighs around 8–10 pounds, Maine Coons often double or even triple that. This makes them one of the most sought-after breeds for families who love a big, cuddly companion.

Big but Gentle

Despite their size, Maine Coons are known for being sweet, social, and easy-going. Their large build matches their big personalities, and they are often compared to dogs because of their loyalty and playful nature.
